So after reading this post, some very nice complete stranger did a mockup of my house with a cute little window box and decorative scroll work. I thought it was pretty cute looking, and since they kindly said I could share it on my blog, I thought I might.

How cute is that?!
I've been thinking a lot about the outside of my house lately, and what I can do to make it prettier. I admit, I haven't painted anything yet, because I want to make sure I'm making the right choices. Yeah, sometimes I'm a little crazy like that. Anyway, I think that I have decided to paint the door red, and the columns a charcoal grey. However, I threw around the idea of painting the door teal before I changed my mind as I can't find the right shade of teal. I suppose I could do blue... can you see why I haven't painted yet? I can't make up my mind!
Also, since I am not in a place to take the awful awnings down at this point (as I have really no other way to replace them or make the house decorative at all), I've decided to paint them. I'm going to paint every other stripe with the same charcoal grey I am painting the posts. Yes, I realize that it probably won't stay and/or might look like crap in a few years, but believe me, this is no permanent solution! I am also throwing around the idea of painting the trim around the windows charcoal grey as well, but I haven't decided yet. I've got the paint, so now I just have to settle on what shade of charcoal grey I want to use. It may be another year or two before I get this done, lol...
I apologize for not keeping up with my blog, if anybody actually reads it. I will try to do better. I do have a couple of really fun and exciting things I've done to the house recently, and I probably should share them.... I'll see what I can do!
Hi, Erica. I'm your newest Follower, so I will admit that I haven't been keeping up with your blog, nor read previous posts, but I would say: Keep your awnings! I think they give your home a little 'something' extra, especially since your house is small and adorable (my house is very tiny myself!) and the awnings give your home character. I do love the 'window box' idea that the person gave you -- but if you don't want to do that this year, just paint your door red like you wish, get just a quart of paint and try it! AND, just get a hanging basket for $15 and cut off the "hanging" part of it, and put the pot on your front step! If you have sun, get something that loves sun, maybe something in yellow, to go with the red door. If it is shady, the Impatience flower is FANTASTIC for shade. I have them at my house, which is very shady. Good luck! You still have the rest of July and all of Aug and Sept and Impatience will last all that time! :)

I can honestly tell you, there is absolutely no way I will be keeping those awnings. I hate them, and the one over the door is broken. They are dirty, too, though you can't tell that from the picture. There are several other things I can do over the door and window that would substitute for awnings but wouldn't look as bad. I've seen lots of people use wood to create a wooden "awning" with shingles on the top, and a few other ideas I've been throwing around. But I hate the awnings, and they desperately need to go. Painting them is my way of spicing up the place a bit without spending a ton of money.
ReplyDeleteI've been planning on doing a window box for awhile, but just like doing anything else, I really don't have the money to buy one or the ability to build one! The picture I posted is old, and I actually have two pots with purple daisies in them sitting on the front porch, along with several more plants in the landscaping in the front. They've been there all summer, but I don't have an updated picture to post right now.
